So, I've got a bit of a problem I totally brought down to myself.

The BBEG of the campaign I'm in is this one sorceress, a real asshole who burns down villages and tortures people for fun, and I've been taunting and mocking and messing up with her just for shits and giggles, because she's just so responsive and easy to anger. Now, obviously she'd love to catch me and stick me in an iron maiden somewhere, but since I've proved to be rather elusive, she has decided to go for the next best thing: find out where my hometown is and torch it to the ground.

On one hand, she has apparently infinite resources in her hands, with a massive army of many standard races, as well as beholders, one mad doctor and his zombie girlfriend, and a gigantic heavily armored and fanatical hellspawn or whatever. On the other hand, my hometown is actually a heavily armored fortress, and could probably withstand at least several weeks of assault; in addition, I have the advantage of being friends with one extremely powerful wizard who could easily wipe the BBEG off the map if he wasn't a pacifist. Also, the BBEG's sister is much nicer person and I'm in at least friendly relations with her. I myself am currently at almost level 6, a swashbuckler who developed an interest in magic and multiclassed to a wizard.

The hometown is literally on the other side of the world of my own current location, and mobilizing her troops over there would take the BBEG several months at the very least. As said, it would also take a few more weeks at least to actually penetrate its defenses. So I have time.

Can I somehow find a way to evade all consenquences of my own deeds, or should I just bend over and take it like a bitch?

This is what Sending was made for.
Try to get Wizbro to act as a mediator between the town and the BBEG.
Make sure it is understood that you have no place in the negotiations- this isn't about you, it's about preventing needless bloodshed.
As long as you've not crossed that line yourself, the BBEG will be out of line in attacking family to get at you and you will have cause to ask Wizbro for help, though I would also plan for the defense of the city.

These things are all the same...

Your first mistake was having a character with a backstory. I only give my RPG characters backstories if I think the stories are compelling enough to be worth the hassle of the GM inevitably kidnapping or killing everyone in them. (Other than hated enemies, who inevitably show up and single you out)

Well, too late to fix that. On the bright side, after your character loses everything, the GM will run out of things to fuck up. Just try to avoid letting the BBEG take anyone prisoner. Then they'll never ever stop torturing them and claiming it's your fault.

>As long as you've not crossed that line yourself, the BBEG will be out of line in attacking family to get at you and you will have cause to ask Wizbro for help
The BBEG apparently tortures and slaughters people for fun. I don't see how torturing and slaughtering people for flimsy, petty reasons is somehow worse than doing it for no reason at all. Moreover, unhelpful asshole ultra-NPCs never step in unless the GM feels threatened, or it's part of some big boring NPC vs NPC plot point they planned way ahead of time.

Anyhoo... Best advice I have is to try and figure out why the BBEG didn't bother crushing this place beforehand, and amplify that. Maybe hit their base of operations while they're in the middle of the siege, or spread fake stories about how you're headed to find an ultimate doom artifact, or whatever.

Also, be willing to kill off your character's loved ones to prevent capture. It'll make you look like a dedicated, motivated hardcase, even though it's actually just convenience.

I can't help but feel that you take a somewhat pessimistic view of the situation.
Admittedly, not much is known about the situation, but I feel an appeal with logic should at least be attempted.
Wizbro, even if pacifistic, could set up nonlethally defensive barriers or similar.

Also, if you do end up going the sacrifice route, make sure to get an infinite-use item of Message implanted somewhere in your body, then something that makes you immune to pain.
Message her endlessly with your quips. She won't be able to resist torturing you, and while your tongue is probably going to be first to go, beaming snarky comments directly into her brain is an amusing revenge.
If she just kills you, ask DM about haunting rules.

You only have experience with bad GM's. Good GM's don't do that stuff.

Now does OP have a good GM?

>Backstories only fuck you up, bro

Tell that to my party, it's usually the opposite for them. They say 'My wizard studied at this university in this nation', then I'm like 'cool' and make sure that they have a few contacts there the next time the party's in the area. The party was able to worm its way into an audience with the Queen of a certain country because the party wizard was on good terms with the (very prestigious) univerity's headmaster.

And not having a solid backstory won't help much either. One character's basic backstory was 'Grew up in (militaristic country) in a large family, served in the army, got booted out, became a merc.' Well, much later in the plot, I introduced an NPC who turned out to be her former field commander. Led to a lot of awkward situations when it turned out he had been part of a cover-up that had affected her family in the past.

So really, it depends on your DM. I dislike randomly abducting family members for plot hooks; it's like the instant ramen equivalent of writing. If I /ever/ do an abducted NPC scenario (I think it has literally happened once in five years of DMing), it's either going to be someone utterly unrelated to the party (go rescue yonder princess), or an actual NPC the party has met and built up a relationship with /during the course of the game/. Even then, it's to be used sparingly.

So yeah. Shit DMs, man.

Crisis averted! ...Well, mostly. A bit of trickery and a couple threats from Wizbro have made the BBEG to back off, for now. She's still got my city on a chokehold if I try anything, though.

Oh and, she somehow found and killed a girl from there whom I never knew and who apparently had a deep long crush on me for a while. That wasn't nice of her and I have no idea how she pulled it off, either.

But here's another question, related to the first: you notice I mentioned the BBEG's much nicer sister in the original post? Now, we've been seeing each other a lot lately, and she's getting quite friendly with me... but, obviously, the BBEG doesn't approve. So, can I put my city and my own life at risk for getting some?

why has this BBEG not just nuked the town you're in?! seriously, being an ass to someone who can end you is not a great idea.
but since you are already chest deep in her wanting to kill you, yes, bone her sister SO HARD and to make it weird go into extreme detail about how you do it, will make everyone else feel really awkward and you may get some role-play EXP.

of course, i play true-neutral characters so they often don't give a shit about stuff like home-towns.

Woo her, do everything properly, and be a perfect gentleman to her sister.
Not having anything to call you on will make her even more irritated.
On the other hand, be aware that you have a ticking time bomb. If you do anything to upset her, the sister will have justification and Wizbro won't have grounds to save your sorry ass.
See if you can get the sister to talk to Ultrabitch and get some alternate leverage on her to make her bugger off.
What's the main plot, anyway?

>What's the main plot, anyway?

Ultrabitch is looking for mysterious jewelry hidden into all the corners of the world, behind monsters and traps and stuff. On surface, she works with the Wizbro, because he's the only one who can translate some ridiculously old runes on 'em, but behind the scenes he employs the party to get the jewels from under her nose and bring them for him instead for safekeeping.

Currently, however, the main plot's taken backside for political intrigue and very dangerous romance. Ultrabitch has a soft spot for her sister and is just looking for excuses to blow up my home.

I actually ended up dancing with her at one point. It was scary as shit.

get married to sister of ultrabitch. then you would be her brother-in-law. i can only imagine the face she would make. you can have wizbro magic the chapel so no one can object by turning you into a frog or some other bullshit.

No, just leave it.
If she does, she ruins the sister's wedding. (I'm assuming she actually likes the sister here.)
Wizbro is there to fix things should they need to be fixed.
If she does nothing, then she was in close enough proximity to do so and you had little to no defenses and she DIDN'T DO IT.
Either way you win- You irritate her immensely, or she pisses off the sister to the point of getting the sister to help against her and you might lose a level or something.

Well, what Id do is to hire something that COULD protect my hometown for me, seeing as how Im on the onter side of the planet. If that doesnt work, see if you cant get a teleport from someone. Or you could go to the temple of whatever diety your dude follows and beg like crazy.
