>"Follow then, and I will guide
>through this forest fell and wide"
>"Ah, thank you. We were tracking a deserter. Molakad, they called him. A bandit from somewhere in Vilous, before he was brought in."
The sergeant pauses.
>"Ah, his tracks go that way."
>"If thence he went, you need not fear
>he's already lost a thing most dear;
>his body's lost its only breath
>for forward there lies only death"
A look of consternation crosses the sergeant's face.
>"Ah, we're supposed to bring him back to be hung. Deserting is a pretty serious thing."
One of the soldiers nudges him.
>"Hey sarge, I don't wanna go back empty-handed neither, but I reckon it's better than death, you know what I'm sayin'?"
>"Ah, yes. Perhaps it is best if we simply report this turn of events. Ah, spirit, perhaps it might be best if you escort us out of this area in the direction from which we came."
You do so.
