Despite some of you being complete strangers, you've all been seated together at a restaurant in Nexus, due to the law against dining alone after sundown. Some guy tried to sell you a memory crystal containing a treasure map.
A pretty lady at another table (who turned out to be dragon-blooded) bought him a drink (which turned out to contain yozi venom) and then, while he was dying, grabbed the crystal and ran off. Might want to be out of town before her employer realizes that one of you actually managed to boot it up first, and got a pretty good look at the map.
Site's over a thousand miles away, but most of that would be river travel, and there's an underground manse, so it should be easy enough to zero in on with geomantic surveying tools even if the map, or your memory or navigational skills, end up a few miles off-target.
If somebody's willing to pay for yozi venom (which is not cheap!) to cover it up, gotta be something seriously valuable out there.

Destination is ~800 mi southeast of Nexus as the crow flies, and half that far north-northeast of the ruins of Denandsor, right in the middle of rocky uplands between the headwaters of the Rolling River and a minor tributary of the Grey River.
So, you could take a more direct route up the Grey, but then face a longer trek overland,
or start by going up the Yellow past Great Forks and then turn south along the Rolling.
Or try something more complicated, to take advantage of esoteric travel options and/or throw off potential pursuit.

You've arrived.

Through those last few dozen miles, trees got taller and denser, air thicker and more humid despite the higher altitude. Sun's near the western horizon as you stumble across the unmistakable sense of a geomantic wellspring somewhere underground. That stone plinth and adjacent stretch of overgrown flagstone roadway (possibly late Shogunate?) aren't part of the actual manse, but they do correspond pretty closely with its horizontal position.

The plinth is 10' high, and around eleven thousand square feet. Might be just enough space to set up all the remaining tents - bit of crowding is a small price to pay for such a conveniently defensible site - but those broad stairs leading down reek of bat guano.

[/i]Cold Blooded in the Blaze of the Sun gently lands the mystical vortex upon the flat top of the ancient palisade, dissipating the summoned winds with but a touch of his worn travel boot clad foot to the flagstones. He looks around, planning where would be the best spot to set up camp while maintaining a defensive advantage before approaching both Kisara & Caitlyn [/i]

"Well, we have made it... not sure where exactly, but we [/i]are[/i] here at least. I am thinking if we try & get all our tents set up here upon this structure to give us some height advantage in case of a ground based assault, & setting up a double line of guards, one set & the other line roaving. We should probably scout out to a half mile or so around us as well. But first, I think set up our Pavilion & get a cup of tea into each of us!"

First thing the scouts find is a second stone platform, about half as tall (that is, 5' lower than the big one), ten yards away to the north. That's close enough most essence-users could jump across the gap, but not normal folks - though mere mortals might be able to climb over through trees. Swampy ground west of it.

Five hours, 20m of passive regeneration- long enough for Spinel to have transferred another 5m into her familiar and to still be topped off herself when the group arrives. (Which leaves the bird with 10m for operation).

"Claiming the high ground, while also securing what looks like the entrance to the site, seems prudent." the Twilight agrees. "Deny our competitors access, and secure an exit for when we explore below."

>We should probably scout out to a half mile or so around us as well.
"I can help with that."

Alighting on top of the plinth, the healer raises her hand, once more casting her metallic companion into the wind. Dispatching the automaton to scout the surroundings, looking for any more structures or well, anything notable or dangerous, really. (The Twilight doesn't offer particularly detailed instructions on this front: the avian has more dots in Survival than her and she trusts it to have better instincts on exploring a jungle). The group brought supplies, but a source of clean water would be good, as would keeping an eye out for sources of disease. (Dexterity 5 + Stealth 5) for the artificial kingfisher to conceal itself, and Perception 4, Awareness 3 (While Undetected +3), and/or Survival 1 (Tracking +3) seem pertinent for exploring.

> you stumble across the unmistakable sense of a geomantic wellspring somewhere underground
Spinel takes a moment to close her eyes and focus on the sensation. Is she close enough to discern the aspect? (Perception 4 + Occult 1+ demesne’s rating), possibly +1 if Kimbery-aspected, though that seems unlikely.

"Good judgment." Thousand Maws assesses of Cold's plan. "You seem like you have experience with this sort of thing. As a merchant, rather than a fighter, I'll ask you to share any security concerns that might come up. No matter how minor, please let me know." She gives a toothy grin, revealing her shark-like teeth.

"Alright, let's get things set up, everyone." She looks to the Twilight's creature. "Will that be all that's needed to do the scouting, or should we split the duties with others?"

Two or three figures are lurking crocodile-like in the swamp, nothing but eyes and nostrils above the surface, just outside thrown-spear range from that lower platform.

Circling around the perimeter counterclockwise, your scout is caught by surprise when a bat suddenly emerges from that round hole in the ground and swallows the automaton assassin whole.

After a brief struggle, you now have a bat carcass - large enough the jeweled kingfisher could barely lift it! - to test for local respiratory or insect-borne diseases, and a flask with a sample of water from the bat's home cave. Said water is almost suspiciously clean, as if it'd been boiled and then poured through a fine silk filter-cloth less than an hour earlier.

>>1093462
Thanks to Sprawling Marsh Indulgence, Thousand Maws spots a flickering light a few hundred yards off in the opposite direction, which the jeweled kingfisher eventually confirms as a set of candles and small offerings around the base of a weathered stone statue.

Nobody else on the team can see even a tenth that far through dense underbrush at night. Properly thorough sweep of any significant radius around the camp could easily end up taking multiple days.

Spinel updates Maw on the discovery of the... shrine? but declines further investigation for the moment. Her familiar isn't going to be a very effective nighttime scout with bats this large on the hunt.

>After a brief struggle, you now have a bat carcass - large enough the jeweled kingfisher could barely lift it! - to test for local respiratory or insect-borne diseases, and a flask with a sample of water from the bat's home cave. Seems like a good idea to do that sooner rather than later, and with the camp still being assembled, it's too soon to sleep anyways, even if things are getting dark. She just has to find a someplace on the plinth to work where she's not going to be in the way of all the activity, and she can provide her own light, if needed.

I'm going to guess testing the bat counts as a variation on the diagnose action? So (Perception 4 + Medicine 5), Flawless Diagnosis Technique, 1m on anima-bright-enough-to-read-by if no one else sets up other light sources, and three successes with the Second Medicine Excellency. Willing to pay those costs twice if the water needs to be checked separately. (If she has to rely on Occult for testing via alchemical methods, she's got worse pools, but could channel Temperance).

Ten foot high ledge makes for an excellent defensive position against a conventional infantry attack. More concerning possibilities are something coming up those stairs, or skirmishers shooting or throwing stuff from the tress.
Clearing all the trees within bowshot of the camp is probably not feasible. I mean, you could certainly try - you've got axes and people who know how to swing 'em - but it wouldn't be quick or safe. Even if successful, risks interference with the geomantic power supply of the manse you came here to plunder.

Moonfire Tribe's tents are each fifteen feet in diameter, and sturdy enough to provide useful protection against the sort of light projectiles you'd expect tree-climbing skirmishers to use, so first priority is probably getting those unpacked and set up. Ought to leave some space between each of the tents, though, for general accessibility, and so if someone sets one tent on fire it wouldn't spread as easily. There's only so much space atop the platform, though.

Draw a diagram of how you're going to arrange the camp.

With the +1 from being focused on keeping watch, you successfully find your way back the camp, but don't spot much else of lasting interest. Echolocation is amazing, you can actually "see" the interiors of solid objects! Charisma 5, Performance 0 with no other bonuses would be a botch, which I'd probably interpret as trying to do a sexy pose while only partway transformed back from bat form, resulting in bemusement or disgust. https://www.schlockmercenary.com/2004-09-16 But, you're not under any time pressure, so could get a +3 from study / monologue, for two successes. Kisara's broad-band flirting isn't enough to overcome Spinel's MDV, even before applying the +2 for running contrary to Temperance. Being actively involved in dissecting a bat probably provides a circumstantial bonus against any attempt to make a bat-shape appealing, too.

For nighttime activities, based on her bat examination Spinel is going to stay up late to set up a ward against mosquitoes (or disease-spreading insects if the initiate-level ritual can be broader than a single species) around the camp. Best to do that before anyone catches any jungle-borne infection rather than before.

Spending 3m to perform the Lesser Ward Against (Natural Animal), dice pool of Manipulation 1 + Occult 1 + Art of Husbandry +1. Difficulty 1, so spending 1wp to ensure success. Casting time is only an hour, could potentially set more than one ward if it's necessary to layer defenses against more than one species.

With only the initiate degree, warded area is limited to at most a 21' diameter circle, or 20' square aligned with (or 45 degrees off from) cardinal directions, so you'd effectively need a separate ward per tent - though careful arrangement could interlock the spaces between, thereby protecting central areas indirectly - and without adept-level maintenance procedures, each only lasts a day.
>(or disease-spreading insects if the initiate-level ritual can be broader than a single species)
Let's say you've got three relevant broad-spectrum ward categories, assuming you don't want to go full "all natural animals" (which would hit false positives on the beastfolk):
-fliers, including mosquitos, bats, and most beetles - involves hanging up nets and beaded curtains
-crawlers and burrowers, including centipedes, fleas, parasitic worms (if in someone's body, compelled departure may be messy) - involves pouring lines of sand
-disease itself, which provides anyone inside +2 dice to resist or recover, and can act as an alarm ward when someone contagious enters or leaves, but doesn't actually keep the pests away to prevent contact

Or you could go for a narrower single-species ward, like "only this one type of bat" or "only those dog-sized carrion-eating centipedes" or "only malaria" which provides a +1 die bonus on your roll to set things up.

Brigid, the first sorcerer, taught Thesis, who taught Sonah, who taught Nanica, who taught Leelah, who taught Derja, who founded the Derjan School, whose greatest apostle was Chone, who taught your old buddy Halleus.
Two and a half millennia ago, right at end of the Thousand Struggles Era, this whole place was buried beneath a massive slab of ice. Halleus - that Cauldronist maniac - invented a spell to simply remove the entire glacier, so the two of you could more easily plunder a cache that some other bastard had hidden under it. Spell involved bleeding from the feet, walking in a spiral (you were on perimeter watch all night long, shooting down any skyships that got too close, though that barely needed your conscious attention) and side effects of the resulting massive geomantic upsurge transformed the whole surrounding area into a jungle.
There was some amazing stuff in that cache, though it's certainly not there anymore. Halleus died less than a day later. Well, less than a day to you. Technically might have been anywhere in the next two centuries by the official calendar.

Based on what you can remember of the plundering itself, later construction work among less intensely personal events in the Second Deliberative Era, and fragmentary Shogunate history lessons from Ophilis Ses back at the Conventicle Malfeasant, there's probably three main layers of tunnels: first two separated from each other, and the surface, by about 50' vertically, but all tangled up like a plate of noodles, third roughly 100' below the second and more isolated. Optimal geomantic arrangement would fit the tunnels into a rectangle 333' east-west by 444' north-south, with the third layer full width east-west, but only about a quarter of the north-south range. Shogunate-era earthbenders probably changed a lot, for their own defensive reasons or whatever other purposes, but they'd at least know to stick to that overall proportion.
Manse proper starts just below the third tunnel layer. The actual essence-channeling structures are a perfect 260' cube, with the lower edge exactly five hundred and fifty-five feet below the surface swamps' high-water mark, but manse interior is mostly a 200' high open space with gardens and an artificial sky. Self-sufficient for food to support a garrison of at least a few hundred, but needs to import timber to keep a particular sacred fire lit, so there'll have to be a dry, walkable route for people to haul in tribute. There's also an underground river which flows upward through a huge pipe in the manse, then out through the east side of the second tunnel layer to eventually join the Rolling River headed toward Great Forks.

Caitlyn slid out of her breastplate to get more comfortable as she sat next to Kisara to snuggle and kiss at the nape of her neck before being startled by a biting fly. Jerking around, she quickly slapped the pest away from her bare thigh before relaxing and turning her attention back to Kisara before a massive mosquito started buzzing about her own ears.

Suddenly standing up in frustration Caitlyn muttered "..thats it, if I cant have peace, then it's war..." with a casual gesture her clothing melted away into strips of moonsilver ribbon coiling about her feminine figure to both shade her modesty while accentuating her curves with their metallic sheen. Over this was an azure silken robe which clouded the vision beneath. Taking a small satchel of salt out, Caitlyn began to trace a circle of salt around the encampment while muttering a prayer of purity to Venus against disease and pestilence. Once the circle had finished being inscribed Caitlyn moved to the center and unleash a mighty daiklave by unwrapping the blue cloth strips from its blade as if breaking a seal. With a fervent prayer to Venus to bless the encampment as an elysium, heat radiated from the blade as it's protective qualities radiated into the line of salt. After a moment the salt burst into flames with the smell of a light incense, leaving a mark on the stones around them.

Kisara just smiled at Caitlyn being attacked by the bugs, giggling as she got up. Granted, she did stare a bit once her clothes melted away. And she just watched Caitlyn handle the ward, before looking out over the camp.
“….I’ve met a fair few people. Seen lands. Seen wonders. I think I found a new one today. This little adventure of ours. This is one I’m going to remember for a long while yet.”
She just smiled at Caitlyn, her ears perking up in happiness.

Irregular tent layout makes it impossible to cover the whole camp with just two wards - pair of hexagons, for example, could be much easier if you're here long enough to make reorganizing worthwhile.

So, two initiate-level Lesser Wards vs. flying pests, flanking one vs. disease spirits, all Manipulation 1 + Occult 4 + Degree 3 + teamwork 4 (Spinel Caryatid plus the rich backer's assistants) + ingredient 2 (Daiklaive of Conquest) + stunt 3 (upgraded by motivation) = 17 dice + 5 successes from a valor channel,
and three adept-level Lesser Ward Maintenance procedures, Perception 2 + Occult 4 + Degree 3 + ingredient 1 (Daiklaive of Conquest) + stunt 3 (upgraded by motivation) = 13 dice + 5 successes from a temperance channel - no teamwork bonus due to partly improvised tools, and available assistants not knowing those procedures.
Rolling for the west section first, then south, then east. Some instinct of Caitlyn's anima makes that seem like the auspicious way to go, since it's nighttime. Central section, including Cold's field kitchen and that roughly 20'x30' staging area / drill yard, will be covered by both types of ward.

Maintenance takes only five extra minutes when combined with initial ward construction, but a full day to reinforce or repair a pre-existing ward. Caitlyn also knows how to rig up a Keyed Ward that would, for example, allow Kisara-in-bat-form to pass through but exclude other seemingly identical bats, and Greater Wards that could outright incinerate insects who dare to intrude, or thwart and seriously injure some spirit trying to work mischief remotely, but those are master-level procedures. Can't afford (and haven't yet been able to scrounge or scratchbuild) the right tools and ingredients. Could try inventing an Occult analogue to Craftsman Needs No Tools? Possibly after an Occult excellency, second Manipulation dot, and/or procedural training for the support staff.

Initiate procedures cost 2m and adept procedures cost 3m, hour and five minutes per ward, so mote cost is effectively negligible, barely exceeding 4m/hour respiration during light activity.
Willpower is actually net positive: spent six to channel virtues, recovered the same amount from stunt awards, plus one from a scene of Motivation progress, and five from a good night's sleep.
As for Valor and Temperance channels, spent three each, recovered one each from good night's sleep thanks to Epic Zeal, net effect down by two. With Phoenix Renewal Tactic (or some way to channel virtues without spending willpower, or to recover willpower after channeling, but before receiving the stunt award), would have been able to restock virtue channels with those stunt awards instead.

Six successes, reduced to four by the external penalty of an effective wall in the way.

Rosy fingers of dawn crest the eastern horizon. Can't hear that directly, of course, but the camp waking up is one of those things you've got a lot of practice noticing, lest folks leave without you.

Sentries spotted a human skull, deliberately emplaced up a tree to the south. They're pretty sure it wasn't there yesterday. Green and black bits on it, possibly metallic. It has good sight lines to most of the camp, so presumably a local necromancer set it up as some kind of spy.

A woman with hard-soled shoes, loose robes, and a gait that suggests concealed weaponry walked right over your grave. She wasn't with the expedition when you left Nexus. Nobody else seems to have noticed her yet, apart from Mr. Fleegman who she's speaking to directly. Can't quite make out all the words, but you recognize the accent - one of those "senior advisors" the Realm sent to aid Thorns sounded very similar. She's not from anywhere on the Blessed Isle, though.

She: "...so that's why I need your body."
Fleeg: "Will it still be mine afterward?"
She: "No. Well, for three days technically, but not in the sense you want."

Blacked-out sections are too faint to be intelligible IC. Doesn't sound like they're flirting.

It's the same sesselja Ashen Mercy summoned: >>1090364
You don't know for sure which abscissic plate it's bound to, or all the orders it's operating under. Could be any of the Conviction or Compassion based plates, or the Sufferer... or concievably some lost plate, though that's probably not worth worrying about.
Well, not just any of the Conviction plates - normal sesseljae aren't clever enough to be Viziers. But if it can't be a Vizier then it does qualify for the Horror plate, in which case the current reluctance to venture into direct sunlight is a very bad sign. Hunter or Functionary are also plausible. Only a very unusual sesselja could be bound as a Warden, but this one has some other unusual qualities so it's not completely out of the question. Sufferer might be a good pick on a more conventional sesselja assignment, chosen by habit. The Ecstatic would be dangerously shortsighted, but you don't know Ashen Mercy well enough to be able to rule it out.

You DO know that it got orders to give Fleegman follow-up medical care. The wards are probably stopping it from reaching him. You also heard Ashen Mercy mention that this particular sesselja is a master (though not full sifu-qualified grandmaster) of a particular esoteric martial art which should allow it to protect people even while remaining dematerialized - which is important, since a stomach bottle bug allowed to materialize in the middle of a jungle, without very explicit orders to the contrary, would be at significant risk of running off to not stop frantically licking colorful frogs until it died.

It's also a card-carrying Carnifex Guild journeyman, meaning it could spend 30m 3wp to create an instance of someone's dead body without actually killing them. While this may seem like an almost perfect solution for the current standoff, there are several potential problems:
- It would need to materialize, possibly going against its summoner's explicit orders. Nobody at the camp has heard from Ashen Mercy in at least a few hours, and she may have said something about needing to fetch something from her manse in the Summer Mountains, so, probably won't be back soon enough to be relevant.
- It would need to be provided with a bladed weapon, which is probably a bad plan if it's about to go on a violent rampage due to abscissic limit break.
- Materializing is expensive. It'll probably have no more than 20 motes left in its pool. Recharging enough to use the Carnifex Guild proprietary technique would then require convincing it to sit still for at least an hour (and delaying Sad Ivory the same amount) and/or feeding it large quantities of poison.

Spinel Caryatid emerges from the tent-in-which-she-slept to find the tense standoff between Cold and the interloper; a standoff which lasts mercifully long enough for the others members of the circle present to quickly bring her up to speed.

Leaving the sorcerer to continue negotiations with the Reckoner, the Twilight approaches, raising one arm in greeting (enough for the sleeve of her robe to fall back, revealing the demon-skin relic worn on her wrist). She introduces herself and addresses it Old Realm, "Excuse me, sesselja? We need to discus the our patient's treatment; it would seem his preexisting condition is acting up." (While not discussed in most medical texts, a fated demise or recurring assassins seeking to enforce it are not conducive to ongoing health).

Somewhat fishing—an appeal to at least some of the orders it was given will hopefully get it talking in a way that helps narrow down plate, orders, if it's high Limit (and help tailor a subsequent social attack). Positioning herself as a peer, and showing the relic is more something familiar than a threat. Spending 1XP to increase Investigation and committing 5m to her anima for two automatic successes. About halfway down to the cavern floor there's a semicircular ledge protruding between a row of columns - clearly artificial, and well taken care of, though unoccupied at the moment.
Easy enough to stop on the ledge, since it's directly under the hole. If you do, convenient exits would be:

To the north - across a narrower bridge, into a hole in the cavern wall about 40' away which reaches either a dead end or a T intersection after another 30' or so. There's a lit torch already present there, which is how you can see that far wall so easily.

Or to the east, through the back wall of the broader pillared ledge. Broad processional hallway, far end of which vanishes into darkness, but about 50' away there's a heavily armored guard standing between a pair of torches on the north wall. Torchlight shines on the bronze plates. Could probably stroll over and get the drop on him, if you were careful about it.

Or, of course, could continue the rest of the way down to the cavern floor. Too dim to make out much detail, but there's a cluster of movement to the north, a bit west of directly underneath that bridge. Maybe between 10 and 20 reptiles, human-sized or a bit larger?
West wall, near the cavern floor, there's a large section which catches the light differently, could be an artificial tunnel or door.
Most of the cavern floor looks sandy rather than rocky, so it should be easy enough to walk around but you'd be leaving clearly visible tracks.

River comes in through the northeast end of the cavern, but it flows down a bit of a cataract, and there don't seem to be walkable ledges to either side, so following it directly back upstream would be a challenge.
Broad pool at the base of the rapids, maybe 30-40' in diameter - half the width of the overall cavern floor - then a narrower channel, about 10-15' wide, which continues southwest for about 60' before hooking east, right at the limit of natural light. Going by echoes, though, south end of the cavern continues pretty far to the east, spacious all the way.

Caitlyn finally wakes up dragging herself out of the tent with a yawn as Cold Blooded dashes off ahead to the ruin entrance; clearly the emergency she had been awoken for had already been resolved if he was being so cavalier; but why was he tossing undergarments around?. Slipping her armor back on, Caitlyn figured that it would make sense soon enough. Pulling a bit of jerky from her pockets, she gathered Kisara to catch up with their long time companion "Lets get going, or Cold will find something interesting without us; like undergarments in a jungle - what exactly happened last night? Did Venus bless him with a companion?"

> The plinth is 10' high, and around eleven thousand square feet. Might be just enough space to set up all the remaining tents - bit of crowding is a small price to pay for such a conveniently defensible site - but those broad stairs leading down reek of bat guano.
As Cold and Woe rush ahead to scout, heedless of the mess, Spinel will try and organize some of the beastfolk into actually clearing a path, especially if the group is going to be trekking up and down these stairs regularly. (This will be somewhat easier if she can grab Kisara to issue orders with her authority before the Lunar departs as well). If they need a foreperson to keep them in line, Jacques has more than enough dots in Craft (Earth) to organize an... earth moving exercise.

It is in fact a T intersection, and there are two more armored guards just around the corner to the west, in front of a very fancy-looking door. They've each got a spear and a sword. Limited angles of approach (light source not positioned to spoil night vision, lower ceiling, each backed up into a corner so limited peripheral from helmets isn't relevant) you're notably less confident of being able to sneak up and take one of them out without the other getting a chance to react.

Could also try just slipping past them into the long dark hallway on the other side. There's an odd smell coming from that direction. Sort of like alkali and rot?

At the bottom of the stairs is a 50' square room with entrances corresponding to the cardinal directions. Ceiling (which Mr. La'rue notes as being sturdy and rather elegantly arched) is 20' high, assuming the layer of guano stays consistently 6-8 inches thick - there could plausibly be pit traps or other surprises hidden under the shin-deep noxious mess. Per corebook p. 155
> WATER OR MUCK
> Characters standing in liquid shallower than ankle depth act without any penalty. Those in liquid up to knee depth or mud/slime up to mid-calf make appropriate Dexterity or movement based rolls at -1 external penalty and can walk or run at only half speed. This penalty increases to -2 for liquid up to waist height or mud up to the knees, and it drops Speed to 1/4 of normal.
This is "mud/slime up to mid-calf" for human-sized folks, at least until the beastmen finish shoveling paths through it. One of them mentions hearing of an alchemist back in the big city who'd pay upwards of an obol per hundred pounds for this stuff, though not completely sure offhand if that meant direct from the source, or after some sort of pre-processing or distillation. Certainly it's quite valuable to farmers as fertilizer - could easily find people willing to trade it for ten times the weight of raw grain almost anywhere in the world, possibly much more in places with exactly the right sort of exhausted soil.

You came in through the south side of the room. East and west exits are straight hallways, 10' square out to the limit of visibility, which isn't far - any bright lights would presumably rile up that massive swarm of mouse-sized bats which is just now settling in to sleep. North way is higher and wider, with a pair of decorative pillars or maybe statues. Hard to make out detail in the shadows at this distance.

1. Woe will check out the ornate door to see if there's any iconography that has obvious meaning, or any symbols she remembers from her Past Life memories.
2. If the guards have, say, an obvious key, map, or written orders from their leaders, or something of that kind on a nearby table or anything like that, she'll try to lift it as she sneaks by.
Assuming nothing in particular happens as she sneaks by, she'll go toward the alkali smell, while checking out whatever she stole.

Cold, following precisely in Woe's footsteps, sets off a weight-sensitive trapdoor in the middle of the bridge and plummets through it into the river. One of the guards jogs over to take a look, then shouts something to the lizards - neither of you recognize the language, but going by tone it might be something like "wasn't one of ours, you can have 'em."

Without that distraction, or some sort of magical invisibility, there's no way Woe would have been able to examine the door while standing directly between the guards without being spotted. As it is, guard who stayed at his post opens said door a crack to whisper a status update to the two others inside, giving Woe a chance to peek through.

Room on the other side is elaborately furnished - possibly for thaumaturgical purposes, though Woe doesn't have nearly enough Occult skill to figure out relevant specifics at a glance. Multiple torch-equivalent light sources, but they seem to be some sort of essence-channeling crystal rather than actual flame. Lever just north of the entrance, within arm's reach of the guards, is presumably connected to some mechanism inside the walls. Big sturdy box near middle of the south wall has keyhole and pride of place that suggest valuables inside. Didn't get a good look at the north wall yet, but symmetrical layout suggests there might be another chest.

Woe legitimately did plan on continuing on and leaving the guards to their thing, but if a guy is just going to STAND there next to a ledge, looking over it, dangling his head over it, with his back to her, not paying any attention to what's behind him, c'mon. That's basically an invitation. It would be rude NOT to.

Still in stealth mode, Woe will sneak up to the guard (avoiding the other one's eyes as well), fall madly in love with him via Tragic Love Amusement, and sweep him in the back as hard as she can with her staff. Then, she's going to duck back into the shadows and wait for a moment. If the guard dies or is attacked down there by the lizards, she'll be quiet and let the guards up with her be confused. If the guard shouts up that he was attacked and they go on alert, then she's going to move to silence them with her anima power, steal someone's weapon while he's alone, and stab him in the throat with her knife. She won't enter the mystery room yet, there are too many more people here can be fallen in love with and stabbed to death.

[For the moment, going for a stealth and a knockback, ideally to do both damage and knock him into the pit to follow after Cold. ...as if to punctuate this point, an empty suit of bronze armor goes sailing past overhead, then clatters to the ground behind him...
>"...and your Essence has some kinship to the Most High. If you would serve Him, as we did of old, come with me. Quickly!"
Then G'ruk says some other stuff to the rest of the lizardfolk, in a language Cold doesn't recognize, and they start hustling along the riverbank toward that door to the southwest.

Seconds later, Seeker of Wind and Woe arrives, kicking off the cave wall to slow her descent. At first glance looks like she's covered in blood, but it's gone by the time she jumps across the river. Maybe just a trick of the light?

It's an iron circle necromancy spell, "Hungry Creeping Shadow." Agents of the Mask of Winters sometimes use it to stop riots by silencing visible leaders. Gives up the chase if you can evade it for an hour, or when touched by fire. If it already grabbed the target, fire usually won't save them, and it only goes after one person per casting anyway. Immune to ordinary weapons.

After Cold, Woe, and the lizardfolk are through the door and it's closed behind them, G'ruk runs a finger along the seams, and stone flows like wax to seal it shut. The rest of them keep moving down the dark tunnel: sixty feet north, ten feet east, then, halfway down a flight of stairs which descend 20' over the course of 30' horizontally they abruptly stop. The lizardman with the blue scars indicates a small hole in the north wall.

A tarry mass of shadows oozes its way up the rope where Cold and Woe descended, cuts an oblivious diagonal through the camp at nearly the speed of a galloping horse (startling several people, but no serious injuries), down the stairs, past Caitlyn, Spinel, Kisara, and the bejeweled scout-bird, then dives into a fissure in the west wall and floor, about twenty feet south of the doors.

The fissure continues horizontally some 150', through about forty feet of wall and then diagonally across the floor of a pillared hall roughly twice the size of the one Kisara and Caitlyn are currently in. Below the fissure's entire length, there's a cave, seemingly separate from - but comparable in size to - the one under the hole Cold and Woe went down. Both areas are basically pitch black, so effective mapping would require a light source... or, possibly, a calligraphy brush Kisara can wield in bat form, to take notes as part of an echolocation-based survey.

Traversing the fissure to reach that larger hall might be relatively straightforward, by professional rock-climber standards - just gotta go single file, pressure-walking against opposite walls - but if part of it turns out to still be unstable, who knows how much rock could suddenly be coming down on your head. There's almost certainly another way around, longer but safer.
