"I... see."

Seems like he noticed something. Could be something else, but let's change the subject anyway.

Harold: "A donation, of course. I've always got a bit of coin for a good cause, Father. Thanks again. I need to head back up to... to see if I can learn anything useful from our attacker."

"He's still here? I might be of help. Should I accompany you?

Harold: "No, I can take care of myself."

I don't think I like people picking up on my lies. I'm so used to the act that it's force of habit now. I think I'll just pocket this until I find Ignatz.

If I can get anything off of our dearly departed friend I've got contacts that could dig around.

Well we should have the ring on for investigating the body, but I agree we should keep it off in coversations until we can test it with some of our friends.

I agree. Hmm. I think this thing would be called a Ring of Truth. It reveals the truth around you to you and to others. Useful to wear when you are more interested in what others have to hide than what you have to hide. I expect sneaking or hiding while wearing it would be impossible.

Good thinking. On it stays, at least for a bit. Now, let's see if our friend here has a nametag.

No nametag, but he was decently well equipped.

Oh, NICE. That piece of paper appears to alert the reader to law enforcement activity. Some sort of criminal aid. Pocket that shit.

Is the vial empty? I can't tell if it's empty or just has a clear liquid in it. It'd be weird if it was empty, but... it's probably the poison he paralyzed you with. Good size vial for dipping weapons into. Might want to leave that here for the Watch to find, so they believe your story.
>>
No. 562107 ID: 53ba34

usefulness of the paper probably depends on how it's keyed. could simply say how close cops are to the assassin. or how close they are to the paper.
>>
No. 562123 ID: d2995c

I suspect the paper is not detecting the watch but rather is receiving a message from this guy's employers who don't yet know of his death. Would we or the mages be able to track where the message was sent from if that is the case?

Call me skeptical, but have we considered candle-smoke on the page written in lemon juice here? Traditional invisible ink is useful for instructions after a particular event has happened.

Well, whatever this paper is it sounds useful, so I'll just keep ahold of it. If it is a telegraph it should be traceable as long as the other page is still around, but I don't think hiring these particular mages to do so is a great plan. They're obviously involved, I just don't know how.

In any case, if there are guards on the way I ought to make our friend here presentable. Now, where did he have this third dagger?

take the ring off while trying to hide things, i don't think it will help.

Maybe if you wore the ring while making things presentable you could tell where things belong, then you can take it off afterwards.

Ok, that looks good. Pretty well hidden, even with the ring. Guess I'll take it off and see if anything changes.

"...said he'd already come up."

Good timing.

"Ah, there he is. Glad you're still- Oh. Well, I s'pose I won't be needin' a description then. Got some other questions if ya don't mind."

Harold: "Ah, certainly. The name's Harold."

Cornwall: "Ah, right. Sergent Cornwall. If ya could, tell me exactly what happened here?"

Ha, Cornwall? Not a very dwarven name.

Stick with the story you told the healer. You came up here to do some business with one of the wizards, and the guy attacked you out of the shadows. You defended yourself but got hit by a poisoned needle.
>>
No. 564523 ID: 53ba34

yes, if he asks how you are alive after the poison say it was a paralyzing, and you managed to stumble your way down the stairs where the miss called for the healer.

Keep the story straight this time. You put on a ring of true sight and noticed an invisible figure in the room, who then attacked you with a sword. You killed him, but he hit you with a poison dart.

Harold: "Alright. Well, I was up here with one of the mages when this guy jumped out at us. While we were fighting he got me with a needle, so I...dealt with him quickly. Barely managed to get back downstairs before I collapsed from the poison."

Cornwall: "And the mage that was in here?"

Harold: "Right. Magnus I think. He panicked and took off as soon as the fighting started. Not sure where he went."

Cornwall: "Hmm. Well, that lines up. What brought ya here?"

Hmm, I was hoping to avoid talking about the ring. I never like telling people what I've got in my back pocket. Let's see..

Harold: "I came by to get a ring identified. Turns out it was too old to get a clear read on it."

Cornwall: "That...sounds like an interesting piece. Where'd ya pick it up?"

Harold: "Hmm? I found it in an old ruin I was exploring."

Guard: "Ruin? Wait a second. Harold. You're Harold James!

Harold: “How - er - That’s right. Harold James, Freelance Archaeologist Extraordinaire. You’ve heard of me then.”

Cornwall: "Wait, who-"

Guard: “Oh yes. Sir. Yes sir. I follow your work very closely. Well as close as I can anyway. Sir. I should have recognized you straight away, but I suppose you don’t carry your weapon with you through town, huh? By the way, how did you get through-“

Harold: “Ah, trade secrets my friend. My line of work is extremely dangerous. I wouldn’t forgive myself if anyone got hurt copying me. It's part of why I leave - uh - Olivia behind when I'm in town.

I always like attaching my name to my deeds, but I think now I make my exit.

I still need to track down Ignatz, pick up the rest of the junk from Az, figure out when the troupe's moving... lots to do.

Harold: "Unfortunately, as much as I enjoy meeting a fan, I do have other engagements. Thank you both for your help, but I need to be on my way."

Cornwall: "Wait I still-"

Guard: "Oh, of course sir. Thank you sir. We'll take care of everything from here."

Oh. Telegraph for sure. Or something similar. 'Where are you?' Huh. Wait, there's more on the other side. 'Is it done?' Hmm...
>>

put down "safe" and "yes". after you are away from the guards.
>>
No. 566367 ID: a87e3a

Oh, it's just a communications scroll, not useful for us at all. How about we tell the guards about it? They can set up a sting.

Unless you want to do it yourself? We could tell them to meet us at some location then ambush whoever's there. On the other hand they'll probably see you coming, recognizable as you are, and try to kill you again.
>>
No. 566373 ID: be48b2

Can Az trace the telegraph? You could try writing "Hiding" on the telegraph, lots of ways to interpret that and whoever has the other paper might suggest a meeting place.
